Did anybody order an Anthem for Geothermal Energy?

Last year, I was preparing a talk on geothermal drilling for the Geological Society of London entitled "Geothermal Heat: Status Quo or Deeper and Down?". And it struck me that the time was ripe to sing about geothermal.

"The engineer Charles Algernon Parsons (1854-1931) was instrumental in developing the steam turbine engine. He'd presumably also been a keen observer of the sinking of mine shafts and the techniques of ground freezing. In around 1904 he proposed a fantasy venture - "The Hellfire Exploration Company" - involving lining a deep shaft with refrigerant pipes to extract and utilise heat from the bowels of the earth. It took around eighty years before his ideas became reality - what he was describing was essentially a closed loop ground source heat pump - now becoming commonplace throughout the world. My research colleagues at Glasgow University are focussing on deep closed loop heat exchangers in the 1 to 3 km range - of the type Parsons suggested.”

lyrics

Let me take you down, past Elysian fields
To the realm, the realm that that time forgot.
Let me take you down, deeper and down
Is it just me or are you feeling kinda hot?

For I’m the great Charles Parsons, the turbine king
I’ll heat your homes with hell’s infernal spring,
With my Irish wit and Geordie grit
I’ll thaw the souls in purgatory.
With my Great Charles Parsons Hellfire Exploration Company

Let me dig you a shaft in finest granite rock
Let me line it – oh - with refrigerant pipes
We’ll descend past demons, drudes and damned souls
And all the spawn of Satan’s archetypes

Put on your red slippers and your finest frock
And I’ll be dapper in my brogues and fines-pressed trews
For there’s a party down in Hades and I think we should look or best
For there’ll be shashlik, toddy and a cheese fondu.

Ah, Asmodeus – marvel at my power
At the heat being pumped from the ground by the kilowatt-hour
Soon hell will be so cold, there’ll be just frozen cremains
And six inches of snow laying on Acheron’s plains
Styx and Lethe will be one big skating rink
It’s just thermodynamics – heat flow from source to sink.
Oh where’s the heat, the heat that once was our demesne
It’s been stolen by Charles Parsons for humankind’s gain
